No other headline is appropriate for yesterdays result.
Off we went to Boston full of hope as we had only lost the earlier season fixture by the odd goal in seven. That one was decided by a dodgy flick given by their umpire 2 minutes from the end of the match.
It's fair to say our hearts sank when we saw that he was to officiate again but you have to deal with what's in front of you as it were so we had a positive team talk and off we went. They were all over us in the first 10 minutes but we eventually got a short corner awarded by their umpire for an awful challenge on our right winger, the first of many it has to be said.
Our striker fired the ball into the net and we turned towards the halfway line in celebration only to see their umpire signal a 16. They looked as shocked as we were and our umpire stopped the clock to enquire what the problem was. He said shot outside the D, definitely not said our umpire and 22 players and subs knew it was in too. No outside he insisted and the decision stood.
We played on, what else can you do and got another PC. this time the ball hit a defenders foot on route and as it got to our man at the far post for him to tap in the net, he played no advantage and blew for another short. Two perfectly good goals disallowed and us desperate for points.
Anyway third time lucky saw us take the lead shortly afterwards, although you could almost here him thinking what excuse can I use this time. At 3 - 0 we would have had them but at 1 - 0 as it showed on the score sheet they were able to equalize before halftime to make it 1 - 1.
Now of course he would be whistling in our box. Their next goal was controlled by a foot before being put in the net and their third was a well taken and well worked move. We threw everything at them and got one back but we could not find an equaliser.
I know it sounds like sour grapes but this guy has been umpiring like this for about 5 seasons even some of their players apologised after the game. It is umpires like this one that are driving players away from the game as well as the spiralling costs. We still have 2 games and a chance to escape. As Boston won promotion we wont set eyes on this umpire next season whatever happens to us.
Today, I found out that we play our last game of the season on Saturday. It's only March! I just hope there will be a Summer League like last year. How am I going to cope without my weekly hockey fix!?!?!

DIVISION 2 NORTH 1st XI ( 0 ) 1 Sudbury 1st XI ( 0 ) 0
March Goal Scorers: ADAM GRAHAM
It has been a long time coming, but March were full value for their first League victory since the 24th November 2007. The home side, sponsored by Bar 23, made a good start, playing neat hockey and, at the same time, making sure that Sudburys forwards were kept at bay. This all changed mid way through the half when Dave Webster was yellow carded and spent the rest of the half and the early part of the second half, watching from the sideline. With only 10 players, March came under more pressure, but the defence held firm and the deadlock wasnt broken at the interval.
Once Dave Webster had served his suspension, March regained their rhythm, but were then hit with a penalty stroke awarded against them. Fortunately the resulting flick struck a post with keeper Joe Bennett seemingly having the shot covered anyway. At the other end, March took the lead, when a good move ended with Adam Graham dribbling the ball from the left to the top of the circle and firing a shot past the keeper. The drama wasnt over as Sudbury were awarded a second penalty stroke. This time the unfortunate forward saw his attempt hit the other post and roll to safety. Sudbury pressed hard for the equalising goal, forcing a number of penalty corners towards the end of the match, but the March defence held firm, keeping a clean sheet for the first time this Season in 21 League and Friendly matches. March fully deserved their victory, with Matt Wallis deserving special mention in a good all round team display.
DIVISION 3 NORTH WEST Rutland 1st XI ( 2 ) 5 2nd XI ( 3 ) 4
March Goal Scorers: ASHLEY WELLAND 3, CHARLIE SAUNDERS 1
Having suffered a 6-2 defeat to Rutland earlier in the Season, March had good reason to be wary for the trip to Stamford on Saturday. Rutland began by forcing a number of penalty corners, but the March defence was up to the task of keeping the forwards out. A quick break from defence led to the opening goal for March, with Steve Birt and Tom Nickalls combining well to give Ashley Welland the chance to slide the ball under the keeper. Rutland were always dangerous, and within 10 minutes they had equalised. Another break from defence gained March a penalty corner, and captain Charlie Saunders thumped the ball past the keeper to put his side ahead again. With half time approaching, March, sponsored by Knights End Training, scored their third goal with a fine solo attempt from Ashley Welland. There was every possibility that an upset could be on the cards. Then Rutland scored from a penalty corner and at the interval, there was only one goal in it.
Rutland had a number of very skilful young players in their squad, and in the second half, they upped the pace of the game and put the March defence under severe pressure. Despite excellent work from keeper Matthew Lynn, defensive errors in front of him gifted Rutland two quick goals and March were now 3-4 behind. As in the first half, Marchs method of hitting on the break worked again with Andrew Wright and John West combining well to give Ashley Welland the chance to score his hat trick goal from a tight angle. At this stage, a draw would have been a fair result, but with the seconds ticking away, Rutland somehow managed to squeeze the ball over the line to snatch victory. This was the best March have played all Season, with Ashley Welland getting the Player of the Match award, and special mention going to defenders Stuart Fox and John Mair.
DIVISION 5 NORTH WEST Alford 2nd XI ( 1 ) 2 3rd XI ( 3 ) 5
March Goal Scorers: GARY HOWSAM 2, ADAM TRIGGS 2, NICK KING 1
Last weeks defeat to Boston was soon forgotten as March travelled to Skegness to play Alford on Saturday and returned with a convincing victory. The home side opened up strongly, and March found themselves a goal behind after just 2 minutes play, following a lapse in defence. The visitors, sponsored by ROI Distribution, fought back well and equalised through Gary Howsam. March went ahead with a goal from Nick King, before Adam Triggs netted to give the visitors a 3-1 interval lead.
March controlled the game at the start of the second half, and a goal from Gary Howsam virtually secured the points for his side. However, Alford came back strongly during the half and were rewarded with a second goal. The game settled down to an even pattern as the half wore on, but then March broke from defence, with an excellent pass from Chris Peckett finding Adam Triggs, who scored his second and Marchs fifth goal to ensure victory. Nick King was outstanding for March, while Manager Sid Dickinson praised the workrate of the youngsters in the team.
DIVISION 6 NORTH WEST Ely City 3rd XI ( 2 ) 7 4th XI ( 1 ) 1
March Goal Scorers: RAMAN SIDHU 1
In a phenomenal first half, March completely outplayed their local neighbours, restricting them to just one attacking move. Unfortunately for the visitors, Ely scored from that move to go ahead in the match. March, sponsored by Hackett Windle, played some of their best hockey for ages, and a good move involving Jack Nisbet and captain Ian Winter, led to youngster Raman Sidhu scoring his first League goal for the 4th XI. The youngster has done remarkably well coming into League hockey for the first time this Season, and working his way up from the 5th XI in only a few weeks. With half time approaching, Ely won a penalty corner and the resulting shot hit defender Chris White in the face. Unluckily for White and for March, Ely were awarded a penalty stroke from which they scored to go 2-1 ahead at the break.
During the half time interval, it transpired that Matthew Webster had probably being playing for part of the first half with a possible broken finger, so it was decided not to risk any further damage in the second half, and March were reduced to 10 players. This was the opportunity that Ely wanted, and although March played well for the first quarter of the half, Ely then ran riot, scoring five goals without reply for a somewhat flattering 7-1 victory. For March, Raman Sidhu was named Player of the Match.
DIVISION 2 NORTH Ladies 1st XI ( 4 ) 7 University of East Anglia 1st XI ( 0 ) 1
March Goal Scorers: EMMA RAWLINSON 3, ROBYN GRIBBLE 2, VERITY ALLEN 1, ANNA WHITTOME 1
When these two sides met back in November 2007, a weakened March lost 2-6. Since that date, March have gone 10 League games without defeat prior to Saturdays return fixture with UEA. The game got off to the best possible start for the home side, sponsored by Brandon Bolt Company. Inside 14 seconds, Emma Rawlinson had the ball in the back of the net. Shereen Hutton intercepted the ball from the oppositions push back and passed to Emma on the right wing who took it up the pitch and struck the goal from the edge of the circle. This shocked the opposition who possibly went into the game rather complacently, following their early Season victory. In the whole of the first half, March played brilliant hockey, keeping possession and passing the ball quickly up the pitch. Emma Rawlinson found the back of the net again with another great strike from the right after 14 minutes. Just 1 minute later, a good run from midfield and cross in from Gemma Parr was touched in by Verity Allen in front of goal, for her first League goal of the Season. UEA went down to 10 players as a hand injury took one of their players out for the rest of the game. Emma Rawlinson completed her hat trick, picking up a rebound off the keepers pads on the penalty spot.
UEA put the pressure on for the first 10 minutes of the second half, and March defended well to keep a clean sheet. Captain Anna Whittome scored the fifth goal, picking the rebound from her first shot and pushing the ball past the keeper. This was shortly followed by a great run down the left wing from Robyn Gribble, who pushed the ball under the keeper for goal number six. UEA scored a consolation goal from open play, following a build up of pressure and a scrabble in front of goal. Keeper Julie Ingham made two great saves to deny them any further score. The final goal of the game was scored by Robyn Gribble with another great run down the left wing and a one on one with the keeper. Emma Rawlinson was voted Player of the Match, with Gemma Parr, Shereen Hutton and Robyn Gribble also being singled out for impressive performances. With two games remaining, March are in with a great chance of promotion. Next week, they travel to play Dereham 2nd XI start time not yet notified.
CAMBS LADIES LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION Ladies 2nd XI ( 0 ) 0 Ely City 1st XI ( 3 ) 6
March ended their League Season as it started, with a very tough game against high flying opposition. An outstanding performance from Player of the Match Sue Heaver and from Shereen Hutton, ensured that Elys attacking play was thwarted in midfield. Despite fine defending, March trailed 0-3 at half time, after Ely had initially taken the lead mid way through the half, when March failed to clear an attacking move.
On a positive note, March, sponsored by Mondi Packaging UK Ltd., pushed Ely back well with some good attacking moves involving Rachel Naughton, with Rachel Wright, Shereen Hutton and Alix Ingram working well in midfield and taking the attack to Ely. All Marchs attacking play went unrewarded and Ely went on to win 6-0 with three unanswered second half goals to add to the three scored in the first half.

1st XI Vs Barford Tigers (H) Lost 3 4 Adam Drake, Joe Finding & Scott Beach
This was a very lack lustre display from City who were outplayed in the first half by a skilful and fast moving Barford side. City seemed to try to play too much hockey in the wrong places and were often caught in possession which on 2 notable occasions Barford severely punished. 1 3 down at half time was the best City could have hoped for with Andy Grimwood in regular action in goal. The first goal in the second half was always going to be important and unfortunately this went to Barford when player-coach, Kalbir Takhir, was beaten on the halfway line and a swift break left Citys defence outnumbered. City did find some spirit to fight back and Barford started to wilt under the pressure receiving 2 yellow cards. City got one back form a fine flowing move which resulted in Scott Gilmour setting up Joe Finding and then Scott Beach notched a drag flick fro a short corner. In the last minute another drag flick was saved by the Barford keeper and Adam Drake drove his shot against the post. Nearly but not quite a result that eventually City thought they deserved.
Saturday 8th NE14Hockey Mens East League
Premier B
2nd XI Vs Chelmsford 2nd XI (H) Won 5 0 Joe Lester, Craig Petrie, Nick Pucacco & Joe Bradley (2)
City 2nd XI took a while to settle but in the end played well enough to record a comfortable victory. The players that impressed were some of the younger ones with Nick Pucacco seizing the chance of his recent promotion to give a promising display in midfield, which allowed Tom Hagues to play further forward where he caused all sorts of problems for the Chelmsford defence. However the man of the match accolade went to Joe Bradley who excelled in centre midfield and scored two second half goals. City now just need one more win from their last 3 games to win promotion.
Div 2N - 3rd XI Vs Cambridge City 4th XI (A) Won 4 0 Shayne Andrews (2), Mike Yeoman & Shane Vincent
With the top of the table clash in this division resulting in a promotion clinching win for St Ives over Ipswich 3rd XI, City kept their promotion hopes alive with a comfortable win in Cambridge. Three of the goals came from the old Maestros (except Aggi Milner) and another Jim Tansley was considered by many to be man of the match.
Div 3NW - 4th XI Vs Cambridge University 3rd XI (A) Lost 1 3 Jack Cartwright
City 4th XI surprised the University side by taking the lead through a Jack Cartwright strike which was the first goal they had conceded in the league since before the Christmas break. However the very young and fit University side gradually took over and despite Citys efforts they won tidily in the end to consolidate their promotion place behind Market Deeping in this division.
Div 4NW - 5th XI Vs Boston 1st XI (H) Lost 0 - 6
Not much to say here, as City were comprehensively outworked and outplayed by a very good and effective Boston 1st XI.
Div 5NW - 6th XI Vs Bourne 3rd XI (H) Lost 4 5 Marcus Howard (2), Aaron Nicholls & David Cooper
This result was a great disappointment for City, as Bourne now have a realistic chance of catching them for the second promotion position. Bourne were very effective on the break and score 4 first half goals form perhaps only 5 attempts on goal. However it was a very open game as City with 13 year old Marcus Howard prominent up front scored 3 of their own for a 3 4 half time score. City had the better of the second half as after scoring a fifth goal Bourne sought to hang on to what they had. However, despite forcing the Bourne keeper to make several telling interventions, City could only force 1 more goal through Aaron Nicholls.
Div 7NW - 8th XI Vs Boston 3rd XI (A) Lost 2 7 Stuart Manning & Simon Round
Citys mix of the very young and quite old was eventually put to the sword by a much stronger Boston side, although everyone said the final score was an unfair one. Cameron Heald and Matt Anderson shone for City.
East Veterans League
CoP Vets Vs Chelmsford Vets (H) Drew 2 2 Richard Herbage & John Dakin
City Vets were second best to a good Chelmsford side for a long time in this game but came back strongly to force a draw in the last 5 minutes. 0 1 down at half time to a short corner goal was a fair reflection of the game at half time and restricted by a few walking wounded and the not uncommon occurrence of Richard Herbage voluntarily almost incurring a long yellow card, City struggled to get back into the match. A freak goal then put City further behind when a completely mis-hit shot from Chelmsfords centre forward fell for their left winger to score. City improved and pressed but it was not until the last 5 minutes that a short corner move between Herbage and Kevin Ledbrook allowed the former to score. A similar move with a minute to go saw the ball fall to John Dakin who buried his shot to save the game.
Another week another win and in the true tradition of a bunch of old gits with their backs to the wall, we continue to fight for survival in our league. After set backs in the last couple of weeks we got back on the winning trail and with 3 games left can still escape the drop.
We are 2 points from safety but still bottom, but there are 4 teams within 2 points and 2 of them will go down. We travel to top of the table Boston next week before the Easter break but we only lost by the odd goal in 7 last time and know we can beat them at our best.

Mens 1st XI SPONSORED BY SAVILLS Robinsons 2 1 Sevenoaks
Sevenoaks mens 1st Xi slipped up on Sunday with a shock 2 1 loss at relegation threatened Robinsons.
Oaks who endured a long journey to Bristol, despite a delay in the start of the game due to the water cannons not working, started brightly on a very dry water based turf, moving the ball well across the back. The home sides intentions were clear from the start, immediately operating a half court press, but with oaks used to playing against such negativity, moved the ball patiently around the pitch looking for the opening. Oaks soon went one nil up, a fast move down oaks right side opened up the Robinsons defence and Craig Ross slotted in from a yard out. Oaks continued to press and won several penalty corners, but as the pitch was in some disrepair, oaks routine could not as slick as normal. Robinsons looked to counter oaks on the break, and from a broken down short corner, equalised.
Oaks were still confident and played some excellent attacking hockey, chance after chance went begging in front of goal and as time ticked by Robinsons sensed they could snatch victory from the jaws of defeat as the Sevenoaks chances on goal came and went. The home side snatched victory with a well worked move, unfortunately aided by their centre halfs thigh in the middle of the pitch, which gave him room to find their forward, who scored from close in.
Oaks now move forward to this weekend when they travel a few days in advance, for training, in order to acclimatise to the time zone and climate, to play in the top of the table clash on Sunday against Exeter University.
Mens 3rd XI Burnt Ash 2nd XI 5 2 Sevenoaks 3rd XI
A brisk but sunny day greeted "the few" of Sevenoaks in their pursuit of survival in the Open Kent/Sussex - Regional League. A freak administrational predicament resulted in Oaks fielding a team of 10 and an enthusiastic Burnt Ash team seemed a daunting prospect. Captain Miller, Brown and the returning Bramwell diligently marshalled the creative formation of 3-4-2 as the opening skirmishes proved to be even. Jones and Young worked tirelessly in the mid-field to deny space and opportunities. Burnt Ash converted courtesy of a freak defensive mishap and were licking their lips in eager anticipation of a prospective goal fest. Oaks stood firm as Mills and Affleck combined with Wenham to assert pressure on the Ash defence. From a resulting Short Corner Wenham neatly converted to even the score and cast doubt amongst the opposition players. Sadly this doubt did not last for long as five minutes before half time they converted two well worked short corners to take a 3 - 1 lead in to the break.
For the second half, Oaks managed to cancel out several waves of Burnt Ash attacks but the crucial point came when an Oaks player was issued with a yellow card and large gaps appeared in their defence. Ash converted another Short Corner and began to make their superior numbers show. Sadly the return of Oaks 10th man was received with a further two players being sent to the bench. Bizarrely a rare Sevenoaks attack (with only 8 on the field) resulted in Staples bundling the ball over the line for a consolation for the visitors. The home side sealed their victory with a comprehensive strike in the dieing minutes of the game.
Mens 5th XI Old Bordenians 4th XI 4 0 Sevenoaks 5th XI
An inconsistent Sevenoaks side met a surprisingly strong Old Bordenians this weekend in a relegation 6-pointer.
In what is becoming normal for the 5s this season their potential winning edge was quickly blunted by conceding a sloppy goal within five minutes. As the half progressed Sevenoaks began to piece their game together in search of the equaliser and their best chance fell to Clifton who was very unlucky not to score with a quick turn and sharp shot from the top of the D. However it was the Old Bs who broke away to steal a second goal. Sevenoaks put the pressure on again late in the first half but were unable to capitalise on a series of penalty corners.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first and for every good move made by Oaks over ambition would result in a loss of possession. On one such occasion the Old Bs broke again and outnumbering the defence got a simple third. A strong tackle on Morris resulted in a yellow card for the Old Bs and with their numerical advantage, Oaks did manage to get the ball in the net - only to have the goal disallowed due to an earlier infringement.
Late on some neat football skills by Sevenoaks on the line resulted in a penalty flick being conceded which was put away high to Cornfords left to finish the scoring.
Overall Sevenoaks were well beaten and will need to dig deep in all areas of the pitch in their last three games of the season if they are to avoid the very real possibility of relegation.
Mens 6th XI Wellcome 5 1 Sevenoaks 6th XI
Sevenoaks Mens Sixth XI slumped to a 5 1 home loss to Wellcome. Again playing with only ten men, Oaks started brightly and a flowing move from rangy Rob House gave tall target man Oliver Reid the opening to cross to Andrew nipper Reid, who opened the scoring. But the visitors soon struck back with a slick shot from a breakaway and a clever flick to the top corner from a short. Marc Ng, Tony Barber and Chris Hix at the back were under pressure. The defence then descended into collective insanity and entertained the crowd by conceding three more goals in a comical chapter of accidents.
Four goals behind at half time, changes were needed. Canny keeper Mike Hrebien re-shaped the team, throwing veteran striker Barber forward. Now the midfield showed their class, with sinuous James Side driving down the right and energetic Jon Evans jinking on the left. Neil Zabit powerfully policed the central defence, Hrebien protected his net with aplomb, and Oaks were able to attack. Only desperate defence kept out a series of shots from Barber, Rice, Reid and House but Oaks could not peg back the lead. Oaks had drawn the second half but the damage had been done by the interval.
Ladies 2nd XI Sevenoaks 1 0 Burnt Ash
With three games remaining, the ladies second team must win all of their remaining games to be assured of promotion in what has become a competitive three horse race in the east league division 1. On Saturday they played relegation candidates, Burnt Ash in a local derby. Always in control, Oaks had all of the pressure in the first half and early on, Ruth Bingham and Katie Arkle went close to scoring as Jo Jackson and Clare Fitzgerald played through balls to split the defence. The Burnt Ash keeper was on form as Oaks pressed for the opening goal that would calm nerves. Ten minutes into the second half, Sevenoaks switched some of their personnel in an attempt to unlock the Ash defense. It began to feel like it wasn't going to be Oaks day when Sophie Crossley's fine strike hit the foot of one her own players. Skipper Sue Acott looked to the bench and called on Katie Hornsby for some skill and inspiration 10 minutes form time - and she duly delivered. Taking a pass form Amanda Bis!
hop, she made a good run into the D as the other Oaks forwards drew the defence. Her strong strike was to good for the keeper. Oaks knew one goal was all they needed as their defence was in full control. A frustrating game but a win nevertheless with all to play for over the next few weeks.
Ladies 3rd XI Sevenoaks 9 - 0 BBHC
Sevenoaks Ladies 3s continued their highly successful unbeaten league run with an emphatic 9 goal victory over BBHC 2s and so regained the top slot in the Kent Premier Division, 4 goals ahead of the other unbeaten side in the league Blackheath 1s. Now 6 points clear of the 3rd and 4th placed teams in the league, the Oaks side is virtually assured of promotion to the East regardless of what happens in their remaining two games, as their goal difference is far superior to the other high placed teams. The Sevenoaks team started strongly and put together some fine attacking moves very early on in the half and were soon rewarded when Maggie Morley slotted the first goal in after a good team build up. Shortly after a double substitution of forwards saw both sets of fresh and very young legs score. Firstly Lottie Willis drove home a left slip from a corner and easily beat the BBHC Goalkeeper. Shortly after Helen Foss received a through pass from skipper Jacqui Hudson behind the defence, and with only the Goalkeeper to beat calmly dodged past her and slipped the ball into the empty net. The second half saw Oaks continue to pile on the pressure and Centre Forward Nicky Smith pounced on any loose ball in the circle and soon completed her hat trick, in between time forwards Julie Nicolson and Georgina Light also added their name to the score sheet. Not to be out done Carolyn Kelly struck a superb short corner to ensure her name was added to the list of scorers. The Sevenoaks defence remained calm at the back throughout the game and stepped up high to tackle, to ensure that the BBHC team never really got too much chance to build up any attacks and keeper Lyn Dawson determined to notch up another clean sheet made one crucial save into the half to ensure that no goals were scored at the wrong end. It was a great relief to BBHC when the final whistle blew, as Sevenoaks 3s never stopped piling on the pressure and creating the chances throughout the match.
Ladies 4th XI Sevenoaks 2 2 Gore Court
An unlucky draw away for Oaks when all points and goals count right up until the last game is played. Oaks determination to win ensured plenty of attack on the Gore Court defence and were unlucky to get an early goal when Tucker hit the post. With the same formation as last week, Nicky Hollamby returned in central midfield to assist newcomer Hattie Blackstone on the forward line. Genth and Tucker once again gave the opposition plenty to do and with Gore Courts usual keeper not playing the stand-in certainly earned her place in their team. Oaks strong midfield with Stevens and Griffiths utilised plenty of play and strong passing on both sides was good. Page, back in the team again, made some good clearances and assisted Hossain in the defence line. Harvey and Girvan also picked up any loose players that came through. A penalty corner to Oaks was converted with a great strike from Stevens into the bottom left hand corner of the goal, no chance for the keeper. Heads high, Oaks continued to dominate the game. A swift ball from midfield found Tucker who coolly slotted home another goal. Oaks seemed to lay low for a while when a short lapse in defence allowed Gore Court to score a goal. This caused a little pressure for Oaks as Gore Court attacked a few more times. Keeper Slaughter made a few saves but Gore Court did not seem to get that far. A positive half time talk from Captain Fowle, assisted by SJ gave the Oaks a head start from the whistle and Gore Court could not clear any free hits. Again Oaks were denied in the second half hitting the post, a clearance off the line and a ball tipped wide. Hubble on the right midfield was quick on the ball and caused plenty of disruption to her player whenever she had the ball. Another break from Gore Court gave them the opportunity to draw level with an unusual umpire decision going there way. Oaks did not give up and were by far the better team overall. Its all down to the last two games and all to play for now.
Ladies 5th XI Crackenford 2nd XI 1 - 2 Sevenoaks 5th XI
Oaks were good value for their 2 - nil lead in the first half. The mature striking partnership of LEAF, NICHOLLS and GRIMBLEY moved the ball intelligently to get behind the home team's defence and threaten their goal on numerous occasions. Just lacking the final strike it took an intervention from INGMAN, forcing from midfield, to drive the ball home for Oak's first.
Brimming with confidence Oaks dominated possession the Crackenford goal was under siege. Hardworking REID J an LINGARD J joined the assault and secured a series of penalty corners. MUTCH strode up to deliver the corners and a deflected strike from GRIMBLEY was directed across the goalmouth by REID J for MUTCH to slot home for Oaks' second of the afternoon. Confident Oaks looked to add to their brace but strong keeping and some wayward striking kept the home team in the game. Crackenford looked increasingly dangerous on the break and the athletic GRIVA had to move quickly off her line to snuff out the threat.
A little more energy was demanded from Oaks at half time to take advantage of their possession. Clearly the home side had received similar instructions and from the push back played with a renewed energy. Crackenford quickly earned their first penalty corner of the afternoon and converted cleverly to change the complexion of the match.
Oaks were rattled and seemed unable to maintain possession. The defence of HALL, TAYLOR and REID H were under pressure and had to work hard to break up the onslaught; GRIVA, influential as ever, made several key saves to steer Oaks to victory.
Just shy of the leaders, but in a clear 2nd place slot promotion beckons Sevenoaks 5ths to division 4.
Gloucester City
Marlborough 1 Gloucester City 8
City improved on their already impressive league goal difference tally in an emphatic 8-1 defeat of relegated Marlborough. City are currently Premier Division One top goal scorers with an impressive 84 league goals in 20 league outings.
Wesley Jackson got the visitors on their way with a fine brace early on, before Matt Fairburn claimed his twentieth league goal of the season ten minutes before the half time interval after beating two defenders and then rounding the goalkeeper.
Andrew Tyrrell then took centre stage with a quick fire hatrick in the opening twenty minutes of the second period and further goals followed courtesy of Iain Pritchard and Chris Harrington.
Elsewhere, Cardiff & UWIC claimed the league title with a victory at Team Bath Buccaneers after stalling against Westbury & UB last weekend.
Gloucester travel to Exeter based Isca next weekend looking to secure runners up spot and to build on their recent run of good form.
Gloucester City Ladies 0 Lansdown Ladies 1
Gloucester faced top of the league Lansdown, knowing it would be nothing but a hard game against the unbeaten side.
The first half started strong from both teams with a very fast paced game. Lansdown challenged the strong Gloucester defence of skipper Kathryn Porter, Suzy Green and Andi Bateman, but with no success as goalkeeper Wendy Harris' debut proved to be a strong one keeping Gloucester in the game on more than one occasion.
Gloucester showed throughout the game some very strong attacking play from Gemma Baber and Gill Reed, and with Gloucester continuing to press Lansdown they found it hard to get the ball to the forward line.
After half time, Gloucester were determined to score even with a well worked routine with Charlotte Lawley breaking through the Lansdown defence and with a fantastic ball to Gemma Baber who was unable to convert for the Gloucester side who saw the score remain goaless.
The second half then saw Lansdown take a lucky goal when a first class save from Wendy Harris resulted in a rebound which Lansdown didn't hesitate to convert.
Gloucester went away from the game with no points but the satisfaction that the game was the strongest they have proved to be all season. Gloucester play Clifton on Saturday with some key players missing.
Thirsk
Ladies 1st XI
Thirsk ladies first team recorded their first win in seven games on Saturday 1st March, by beating Leeds Carnegie 3-2. Leeds scored first after 15 minutes and this was redressed in the early part of the second half by Thirsk; scored by Helen Goacher. The second goal for Thirsk quickly followed with a strike by Hannah Rogers.
Thirsk continued to battle hard, successfully defending several short corners. Thirsk keeper Val Grainger saved a penalty flick. Then Thirsk scored a third through Stacey Bell. A late penalty corner to Leeds led to their second goal. Player of the match was Siobhan Gill. This was an excellent team effort and a well deserved win.
This moves them to 11th position in the premier division and they now have a mathematical chance of being able to stay in this division.
Mens 1st XI
Thirsk men's first's hopes of promotion took a jolt with a 2-1 defeat from Leeds. Despite missing a number of players through injury it was an even opening with no team creating any clear cut chances. Mid way through the first half Leeds however opened the scoring from a well worked short corner. The leeds keeper made a couple of great stops to prevent Thirsk equalising and Thirsk wasted a great opportunity just before half time. The second half started as the first half had ended with Thirsk on top. With 15 minutes to go Thirsk deservedly equalised with a great move down the right hand side, Phil Hughes providing the cross and Andy Carney slotted home into the bottom corner.
The goal seemed to spur Leeds and they retook the lead with eight minutes to go. A reverse stick shot was slightly deflected by a Thirsk defender to beat Jeff Lewis in the Thirsk goal. Leeds then hung on to win 2-1. Results from other games means that there are now five teams fighting for two promotion places in division 3 and there are only three games to go.
Mens 2nd XI
The men's 2nds travelled to Leeds to play their 6th team in a fixture where both teams were on the same points. A squad of 14, mostly younger players under 18, joined by 3 senior players, should have been able to produce a result in our favour. Regretably Thirsk again were unable to convert their many chances into goals while Leeds seemed to be able to score almost at will. The early play was fairly even with play moving to both ends of the field. This was soon overcome with Leeds scoring twice during a 10 minute spell, once from a short corner. The chances continued to both sides but this time Thirsk managed to press into the Leeds area and produced a strong finish by Ben Taylor to make the score at half time 2-1.
The second half continued much as the first with another goal by Leeds produced from a poor clearance by the Thirsk defence. Then after another short corner Leeds pushed the score up to 4-1 before Thirsk produced a late surge and scored a second with David Ramsden following up a slack clearance by the Leeds defence that he lifted past the stranded keeper. Another attack by Leeds produced their 5th goal and despite another period of pressure by Thirsk no more goals were scored.
It has now been 9 games without a win; this must be reversed if the seconds are to finish in a comfortable postion in division 8. They presently lie 9th but not that far off the relegation zone.
Ladies 2nd XI
Thirsk Ladies IIs travelled to Leeds University to play their 3rd team who are currently positioned 2nd in Division 4. As Thirsk are at the bottom of the division they were expecting a challenging match. Playing into a very strong head wind, Thirsk managed to defend their goal very well with some good saves coming from Bex Walters in goal and some solid defending from sweeper Charlotte Bulmer. Unfortunately at half time Thirsk found themselves 2 goals down.
With the start of the second half and with the wind on their backs, Thirsk managed to start applying some pressure on Leeds Uni and very soon were awarded a short corner from which they scored with a very strong strike from Karen Skippings. As in previous games, this gave Thirsk the spirit to keep fighting so it was unlucky that they went another goal down after a very weak ball managed to weave its way into Thirsks goal. The final score being 3 1 to the home team. Player of the Match was awarded to Jade Beckwith.
Success in Sports Club of the Year Competition
Late last year the club entered a national competition for the award of Sports Club of the Year. Each sport has to nominate club(s) by their national body and Thirsk has been put forward by England Hockey as one of three clubs for hockey in England. The other two are in the south and we feel that this is a distinct honour given the size of the club when compared with many others. Below is an extract from the letter received from England Hockey:-
Thank you for your recent application for the Central Council of Physical Recreation (CCPR) Sports Club of the Year Award (SCOTY). We received a number of high quality applications which just goes to show the significant improvement in development of club hockey at grassroots level and beyond.
Of the applications England Hockey received, we are only able to nominate three clubs to CCPR for further consideration and we are delighted to inform you that your club will be one of these three. Your application has been received by CCPR for further consideration alongside other nominations from a variety of sports and clubs in bidding to win CCPR prestigious Sports Club of the Year Award.
We would like to take this opportunity in congratulating you in reaching this stage and thanking you for the continued work which your club and its members do, to assist the development of hockey both at a local and National level.
Harleston Magpies Almost Crowned Champs
Harleston Magpies mens first team all but secured the East League title when they confidently beat St Albans 2-1 at home last weekend. The winning margin would have been greater but for a suberb save by the visiting keeper and a goal line clearance by a defender. Magpies have four games remaining and need to secure one point to be certain of the title.
Magpies will have perhaps their toughest game since the mid season break when they visit Havering. The Essex side are on a good run having beaten St Albans by the odd goal in seven and drawing with Cambridge City. Magpies have one or two small injury doubts and travel with a full squad of fifteen players.
Robert Stimpson commented after the St Albans winI was extremely pleased with the win, we dominated eighty per cent of the game and the winning margin could have been greater. We need to secure the point to win the title and then continue preparing the squad for the play offs.

Slazenger England League National Northern Division Sunday 02/03/08 CoP 1st XI Vs University of Birmingham (A) Lost 1 3 Joe Finding
On paper this was not a bad result away from home against the league leaders but City were not helped by their own indiscipline which was rewarded with lengthy yellow cards for 2 of the younger members of the squad, Greg Hopkinson and Scott Gilmour. In addition Mark Featherstone had two rests the second for an offence that was a mystery to almost everyone there except one of the umpires which meant that for a significant part of the match The University only had 10 to beat. This should have been a yard stick for the standard of opposition and quality needed for next year as with no promotion and the reorganisation, City will meet all of the top teams in this division plus some from the division above. Overall this was a competitive performance but lacking the product to match a very useful team.
NE14Hockey Mens East League Premier B CoP 2nd XI Vs Long Sutton 1st XI (H) Lost 2 3 Paul Hillsdon & Andrew Cave
City were given a real shock by Long Sutton who came with a plan to always play 2 forwards high up the pitch and stretch Citys defence. Ex-City player the legend that is Gary Hales was an integral part of this
And Sutton led 1 -0 at half time which was extended to 2 when hales converted a penalty stroke immediately after half time the award of which mystified the City team and the crowd. Eventually Paul Hillsdon scored from a short corner move but Sutton broke away to score a third. Andrew Cave scored to give City hope and the Sutton keeper and captain enhanced his reputation by adding to his catalogue of saves including a fine one at the death from another Hillsdon strike. City now need 2 wins from their last 4 matches to be sure of promotion.
Div 2N - 3rd XI Vs Ipswich & E S 1st XI (A) Lost 2 3 Shayne Andrews & Joe Bradley
An under strength City 3rd XI faltered badly in their pursuit of the second promotion spot in this division with a narrow defeat at 5th placed Ipswich & East Suffolk. A fine display by Joe Bradley in midfield was unable to make the difference and with Ipswich 3rd XI winning and having a game in hand promotion now looks unlikely with only 4 games to play.
Div 3NW - 4th XI Vs Cambs Nomads 2nd XI (H) Won 4 2 Wayne Humphreys, Stuart Bond & Jack Cartwright
City played very well for 60 minutes to build a comfortable 4 1 lead against a good Nomads side. However they lost their way at the end as Nomads scored, had a shot against the post and another cleared off the line. However, there were plenty of positives in the performances of Jack Cartwright up front and 2 more goals for Stuart Bond. Ian Martin and Mark Fowler continue to perform very well at this level and Peter Hings at sweeper excelled for another team and now insists hes pressing for a game in the 3rd XI! City, perhaps surprising themselves, are now in a solid 4th place in their division.
Div 4NW - 5th XI Vs Peterborough Exiles (H) Drew 1 1 David Cooper
In what for large part was a poor game with little of the passion that might have been expected of a local derby, City had the better of the chances but paid the penalty for not finishing their much older opponents off after taking a lead through a good finish from David Cooper mid way through the first half. Stuart Ireland made some good saves for Exiles and after ageless Steve Browning had poached an equaliser from close range they might have stolen the game when only desperate defending kept out danger man Neil Burford. Trevor Matthews received the man of the match tag for City for playing so well and persistently and generally minimising the threat from Burford. This result means City are relatively safe but Exiles are still in a real dog fight to avoid relegation.
Div 5NW - 6th XI Vs Newmarket 1st XI (A) Won 3 1 Marcus Howard, Graham Finding & Aaron Nicholls
City continue their excellent run of form to clinch another win on what looks like an inexorable path to joining their 5th XI in division 5NW. Aaron Nicholls was again rewarded by a goal during his man of the match performance and young Marcus Howard notched another to add to his growing total and reputation.
Div 6NW - 7th XI Vs Cambridge South 3rd XI (H) Drew 0 0
Against the runaway leaders of this division, City had slightly less of the possession but still enough short corners and chances to have perhaps produced a surprise result with old hands Kevin Ledbrook and Alistair Bradley tireless in their efforts in midfield. Cambridge South always carried a threat and only a fine display by TJ West in goal earned City a great result. Even then he was indebted to 2 goal line clearances from Dyllan Mistry. City now look safe in this division and Skipper Dave Simpson praised his team for what was their best result of the season.
Div 7NW - 8th XI Vs St Ives 5th XI (A) Lost 0 - 4
An under strength City 8ths again put on a creditable display for no reward especially as they played without a goalkeeper. Skipper Peter Leaton was again proud of his very young side that will emerge much stronger next season.
March Town
DIVISION 2 NORTH Norwich Union 2nd XI ( 2 ) 2 March Ladies 1st XI ( 1 ) 2
March Goal Scorers: TRACY PALMER 1, GEMMA PARR 1
Captain Anna Whittome regarded Saturdays result as two points lost rather than a point gained from the teams trip to play Norwich Union 2nd XI. Although March, sponsored by Brandon Bolt Company, were the better side in the early exchanges they soon found themselves a goal behind from a quick break by the home forwards. A lot of effort and good play from the visitors saw them gain a penalty corner and a fine strike by Tracy Palmer from the edge of the circle brought March level. With March doing most of the attacking, they had insufficient players back in defence when Norwich Union broke again, and with only keeper Julie Ingham to beat, the Norwich forward slotted the ball past her to give her side a 2-1 interval lead.
March played well in the second half against tough opposition, having the better shots on goal, but being unable to finish off several good moves. The equalising goal came from another penalty corner with Player of the Match Gemma Parr firing a great shot past the keeper from the left of the circle. For the remainder of the half, March had ample opportunity to win, with passes going across goal but no-one able to add the finishing touch. Lauren Oakman had a good game up front without finding the net for once, and in defence, Kate Hurn was in very good form.
CAMBS LADIES LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION Cambridge University 3rd XI ( 3 ) 9 March Ladies 2nd XI ( 0 ) 0
Although Saturdays game was scheduled for Cambridge, it was played at the Neale Wade Astro. March, sponsored by Mondi Packaging UK Ltd., knew they were in for a tough game against high fliers Cambridge University 3rd XI. An encouraging early start saw March compete well in midfield and disrupt the flowing play of the University forwards. During the half, March made some encouraging attacks involving Rachel Wright and Jenny Palmer, resulting in good opportunities on goal for Rachel Naughton. At the back, some poor clearances led to Cambridge taking the lead, and by half time, March were 0-3 down.
The second half saw March under more pressure from Cambridges flowing game. With the defence struggling to clear loose balls in the circle, the goal was under constant siege and six further goals were conceded during the half without reply. Marchs best chance came from a penalty corner routine, with captain Cath Fryett firing a shot hard into the bottom corner of the goal, only for the keeper to pull off an excellent save.
DIVISION 2 NORTH Cambridge City 3rd XI ( 0 ) 2 March Town 1st XI ( 0 ) 0
March travelled to Cambridge City on Saturday, aware of the closeness of the match between the two sides played just before Xmas 2007. March, sponsored by Bar 23, competed well in an even encounter, against a side of similar standard. The visitors attacked fluently and regularly, with the impressive debutant Ryan Wright, and Josh Birt and Hugh Whittome linking well up front. March had the best chances of the half, with Daniel Shirley having an impressive run and pass to Ryan Wright in the opposing circle, only for Wrights shot to go agonisingly wide of the post. The same two players linked again later in the half, only this time it was Wrights pass and Shirleys shot that missed the goal by inches, as has happened so often this Season. The midfield quartet of Daniel Shirley, Dave Webster, Adam Graham and Tony Manze all linked well to support any attacking moves. At half time. March were rueing their luck, knowing that they should have been comfortably in the lead.
The second half was played at a different pace, with the defensive trio of Tom Cole, Neil Liversedge and Ben Wright called into action more, and with keeper Joe Bennett seeing much more of the ball. Cambridge City took the lead from a penalty corner when Tony Manze was penalised for what seemed a fair challenge for the ball. Although March pressed for the equalising goal, they were thwarted by a more organised Cambridge City defence, and fell further behind following a defensive error. March considered themselves very unlucky not to have at least scored a goal and taken the points from the chances they had.
DIVISION 3 NORTH WEST March Town 2nd XI ( 0 ) 1 Market Deeping 1st XI ( 6 ) 8
March Goal Scorers: ASHLEY WELLAND 1
This match ran true to form, although Marchs second half fightback gave the League leaders something to think about. Early pressure from the visitors led to a goal after just 9 minutes play, with a well worked reverse stick sweep past Matthew Lynn. The remainder of the half belonged to Market Deeping with four goals coming from well executed penalty corner routines to give the visitors a 5-0 lead. During this spell, March, sponsored by Knights End Training, were unable to mount one meaningful attack against a side who prior to Saturdays game, had scored 116 goals and only conceded 16 from their previous 17 matches played. Just before half time, Market Deeping scored their sixth and best goal of the game, as the forwards cut through the March defence like a knife through butter.
Although March had more of the attacking play in the second half, forcing several penalty corners, it was the visitors who went 8-0 ahead with two goals in a short space of time. Then Marchs attacking play was rewarded. A free hit taken by John West found Ashley Welland whose firm strike into the bottom corner of the goal gave the keeper no chance. It was too little, too late for the home side, who kept on the attack, but were unable to penetrate the Market Deeping defence again. Brian Fox was named Player of the Match. Next week, March travel to play Rutland 1st XI start time not notified.
DIVISION 5 NORTH WEST March Town 3rd XI ( 1 ) 4 Boston 2nd XI ( 3 ) 5
March Goal Scorers: ADAM TRIGGS 2, MARTIN TODD 1, CHARLIE BOUGHTON 1
This was the shock result of the day, with third placed March fully expected to beat third bottom Boston 2nd XI. However, with the entire Mens section struggling for players this week, it was a somewhat changed side fielded by the home side. Straight from the start, March, sponsored by ROI Distribution, had the chance to take the lead from a penalty stroke, but the opportunity was squandered. Almost immediately, Boston went on the attack and scored. Back came March, and Adam Triggs fired home the equalising goal. The Boston goal was under siege for the remainder of the half, but the visitors did what March are renowned for when they are on the back foot. They broke from defence twice and scored both times to open up a 3-1 interval lead. March had only themselves to blame as chance after chance was missed in the first half.
March began the second half as they ended the first, on the attack, but again Boston broke from defence and scored a fourth goal to leave the home side with a lot to do to get back into the game. March then took the game to Boston with Adam Triggs scoring his second goal. The March defence was unusually fragile, allowing Boston to score a fifth goal, before Martin Todd brought his side back to 3-5. When leading scorer Charlie Boughton made it 4-5 there was still hope for March, but their earlier missed chances cost them dearly in a match they should have won with ease. Manager Sid Dickinson said after the game that it was a poor result for his side, adding that if you dont take your chances you dont win matches.
DIVISION 6 NORTH WEST March Town 4th XI ( 0 ) 0 Wisbech Town 4th XI ( 3 ) 3
With only 5 minutes on the clock, March found themselves a goal down to neighbours Wisbech Town. The home side, sponsored by Hackett Windle, fought back well, but as on so many occasions this Season, were unable to make the most of their goal scoring chances. A break from defence saw Wisbech take a two goal lead, and for the rest of the half it was backs to the wall for the March defence, with keeper and Player of the Match Scott Bamford in outstanding form for the home side. Even he was powerless to stop Wisbech from scoring their third goal just before half time.
The second half was more even, with both sides having chances, but with defences coming out on top. As in the first half, Scott Bamford saved his side from further punishment on a number of occasions. Wisbech had a goal disallowed during the half, and overall, the visitors were the better side and deserved their victory. Next week March travel to play Ely City 3rd XI start 3pm.
DIVISION 7 NORTH WEST Spalding 4th XI ( 1 ) 4 March Town 5th XI ( 1 ) 5
March Goal Scorers: ROSS AMBLER 3, DAVID HODSON 1, MATTHEW LAKEY 1
This was a match of non stop aggression and activity, with March coming out on top in their pursuit of promotion. In the first 5 minutes, Spalding had two penalty corners, the first of which was well saved by keeper Gary Sandford and defender Nigel Foad. Minutes later, Gary Sandford made a good save from the second corner strike. At the other end, March squandered a penalty corner chance before Spalding eventually took the lead after 20 minutes play. Marchs attacking play saw them gain three more penalty corners but all three came to nothing. With Spalding back on the attack, March defender Stuart Fox collided with keeper Gary Sandford and the match was held up for several minutes with the March keeper clearly concussed. When play was resumed, March won a penalty stroke, but the Spalding keeper saved Toby Foxs attempt. Gary Sandford soon proved that he had regained his senses when he made three terrific saves from a penalty corner strike and the subsequent rebound shots. At the Spalding end of the pitch, March missed yet another penalty corner before Ross Ambler levelled the scores almost on the stroke of half time. During the half, both Jamie Sandford and Nigel Foad were outstanding in the March defence.
The action continued in the second half with Spalding regaining the lead after 9 minutes. March were at last beginning to gel together and Ross Ambler scored his second goal to level the scores again. A fine move involving Matthew Lakey, Ross Ambler and David Hodson ended with Ross Ambler scoring his hat trick goal to put his side ahead for the first time in the match. Spalding had another chance from a penalty corner before David Hodson put March 4-2 ahead and seemingly out of danger. However, Spalding had other ideas and came back to score their third goal. Then March keeper Gary Sandford was sent off for having too much to say, and Stuart Fox took over in goal. While the change was being made, March decided to try and defend their lead, but once play resumed, Matthew Lakey and Jamie Sandford had other ideas, as the two combined to take the ball out of defence and into the opposing circle, with Matthew Lakey putting his shot wide of the keeper to put March 5-3 ahead. The visitors still couldnt relax as Spalding scored their fourth goal just minutes from the end of a pulsating match, the only shot to get past stand in keeper Stuart Fox.
On Saturday Thirsk hockey club men's 2nd team were at home against York University. Due to a late re-arranged game by the 1st team players and umpires were taken such that we started with only 10 players given that an umpire had to be supplied from the players.
York had only brought 9 players so Thirsk should have been able to control the game. However the York players moved quicker and passed better to make it clear that only having 9 players was not a disadvantage to them. Thirsk tried to compete but the passing was not to a high standard and within 6 minutes York scored their first goal. The mix of juniors and seniors continued to try and work out their positions and attempted to contain the quickly moving York attack, but the marking was not close enough or determined enough. York then scored from a short corner, despite a previous attempt being well saved. With 10 minutes of the first half remaining another player arrived and finally Thirsk were up to the full compliment of 11. Despite this giving them a better opportunity to pressure the York defence, it was York who scored again. Half time arrived at 3-0 down. Thirsk swapped the umpire so that both 'volunteers' were able to get some of a game. The rearranged defence improved and for a while into the second half some opportunities were made to have a strike at goal. Eventually the ball went in the net but the umpire disallowed it for a back stick. The York play continued to exploit the Thirsk weaknesses and as a result a further 3 goals were conceeded. Another player arrived with about 15 minutes to go, but despite the injection of fresh legs Thirsk were not able to get on the score board. Overall Thirsk tried hard but could not take advantage of their numbers superiority, and against the division leaders the gap in ability was highlighted with the result of a 6-0 loss. Thanks to Frazer Phillips and Mike Rushmere for umpiring; next week we travel to 4th in the division where we must concentrate on better marking and stronger passing. Position 8 in division 8 is maintained.
The men's 1st team were away to Slazengers They won 3-0 with two goals scored by Andy Carney and one by Scott Miles. This was probably as a consolation after he had missed a penalty flick. This puts the 1st team in a strong second place in division 3.
Thirsk Ladies IIs travelled to Huddersfield to play Salendine Nook 1. Thirsk started the game very slowly and conceded a goal very early on. By the end of the first half they found themselves 2 0 down. However, the second half started much better and they looked like a different team, picking up the pace and playing some excellent team hockey. A well deserved goal from Jade Beckwith from a short corner put the spring back into Thirsks step and they started to believe in themselves and never stopped the attacks into the opposition's half.
With 20 seconds of the match left Thirsk were awarded a short corner and leaving Bex Walters in her goal the whole team pressed forward around the circle. Desperate to score the equaliser Thirsk attacked from the corner and were rewarded when Clare Goacher scored a goal just before the final whistle, leaving the score at 2 2. ( Its nice when players come off the pitch with a smile on their faces!) Player of the match was Jade Beckwith. They are still in 12th position in division 4 but could get out of relegation if they can win a couple of their remaining games.
The ladies 1sts travelled to Leeds Adel and lost 2-3. They remain firmly at the foot of the premier division.
The under 14 boys team travelled to Leeds on Sunday morning and then travelled back without playing. The pitch was too frozen to enable any games to be played. They are 18th out of 23 with one more meeting on the 24th February where they could obtain some points that would move them up the table.
Slazenger England League National Northern Division
Sunday Feb 17th CoP 1st XI Vs Telford & Wrekin (A) Lost 1 3 Scott Beach
With their resources at full stretch City were further handicapped by injuries in the game to youngsters Alex Boxall and Neil Evans that led to playing the last 15 minutes with 10 men. City always controlled large parts of the game and at 1 1 hit the post from a short corner. They then conceded a soft short corner goal and as they chased an equaliser with 10 men were punished further with Telfords third goal giving an unfair scoreline. There were fine performances at the back again from the evergreens Mark Featherstone and Adam Drake that epitomised Citys display. However, after 4 successive narrow defeats City need a morale boosting victory next week against lowly Kingston-upon-Hull to get their second half of the season going.
NE14Hockey Mens East Leagues
Premier B CoP 2nd XI Vs Pelicans 1st XI (H) Won 3 2 Shane Vincent, Joe Lester & Craig Petrie
City started well in a vital second Vs third encounter and played some good hockey to establish a 3 0 lead. However, they fell away badly as they struggled to keep their passing game together, giving the ball away too easily. Pelicans scored two goals and pressed hard for an equaliser but City just held on. The good news was that in the same league Bourne beat Wisbech 3 - 2 and City had taken over at the top of the table by 2 points.
Sunday 17th CoP 2nd XI Vs West Herts 1st XI (H) Won 1 0 Andrew Cave
In their second match of the weekend City struggled against a very young, skilful and fit West Herts side that had the better of a tight first half without really creating many chances. City, after being grateful to be level 0 0 at half time, improved in the second half and gained some control but the result could still have gone either way. As the game became more stretched City shot wide narrowly twice in quick succession from Joe Lester and Paul Hillsdon but were rewarded with 5 minutes left when an alternative short corner move led to Tom Hagues returning the ball for Andrew Cave to shoot home. There was still time for West Herts to shoot narrowly wide twice and City to miss a presentable opportunity before a welcome final whistle. Fine games from Joe Lester up front and tackling for fun Sanjay Dhanani were vital contributions to Citys win.
City having shown how to win ugly, have now established a 5 point lead at the top of the division over Wisbech with 6 hard games to go. What is just as important, having beaten the next two teams (in third and fourth places) this weekend is the gap to them is a welcome 12 points.
Div 2N - 3rd XI Vs Cambridge City 3rd XI (A) Won 4 0 Mike Yeoman, Matt Sutterby, Jim Tansley & Sam Ure
This traditionally is a very tough fixture which started that way but COP created a number of chances which were not taken until they forced a short corner which was dispatched by Mike Yeoman for a deserved 1- 0 half time score line. After the break COP dominated the game and scored through a Sutterby short corner. Two flowing moves the first resulted in Jim Tansley flicking a shot into the goal, the second move starting with an aerial from sweeper Mark Britton to Andrews who crossed for Sam Ure to finish on his reverse. M.O.M Shayne Andrews. It is Sudbury at home next week who sit just below COP as City continue their push for promotion.
Div 3NW - 4th XI Vs Ely City 1st XI (A) Drew 2 2 Martin Hill (2)
City should have been pleased to have won a point away at high flying Ely 1st XI but after leading 2 0 at half time against the run of play, they felt disappointed not to have hung on to win. Two excellently taken goals from Ely squared the match after a lot of pressure and only good performances from Taff Brady in goal and Simon Roberts in the end sealed a valuable point.
Div 4NW - 5th XI Vs Ely City 2nd XI (H) Drew 0 - 0
In a lack lustre game of few chances the two goalkeepers were largely spectators. Against a team several places above them, City could feel disappointed that they did not force a win having had more of the play.
Div 5NW - 6th XI Vs St Ives 4th XI (H) Won 2 1 Graham Mitchell & Marcus Howard
This was another narrow but vital win for City as they continue to chase the second promotion spot with their third consecutive 2 1 win. Matt Pentecost in goal was again given the man of the match accolade which perhaps tells the story of the game. City continue to surprise themselves and although they face some very tough games in the next few weeks, they have showed a resolve and a level of teamwork that should now see them through to promotion.
Div 6NW - 7th XI Vs Ely City 3rd XI (H) Won 4 0 Peter Hings, Adam Wilson, Jon Bigham & Alistair Bradley
City were in control throughout the game playing some excellent, fluent passing hockey. The fine group of youngsters contributed all over the pitch and if it wasn't for some missed chances in the second half, the score could have well been a lot more. It was a very important three points that lifts City closer towards safety; although it is essential they gain points next week at Horncastle and continue this momentum throughout the rest of the season, now having won three out of their last four games.
Div 7NW - 8th XI Vs Cambridge South 4thXI (A) Lost 0 5
Against what was essentially a full mens team, Citys youngsters battled well but had to admit defeat in the end. Michael Green on his re-appearance in goal managed to keep the score respectable with some fine saves.
East Veterans League CoP Vets Vs Bedford Town Vets (A) Won 3 1 Ian Kennedy (2) & Martin Collcott
City Vets took a long time to come to terms with a recently laid and bouncy pitch at Bedford and after taking a lead through that man, Ian Kennedy, were soon pegged back by a good goal from a flowing Bedford move. Right on half time City took a perhaps undeserved lead through a Martin Collcott short corner strike that the full back just failed to prevent going over the line. In the second half City vets improved and added a further goal through Kennedy and held on to the advantage with increasing control.
NE14 HOCKEY EAST MENS LEAGUE DIVISION 2 NORTH
Bedford 2nd XI ( 3 ) 9 March Town 1st XI ( 0 ) 0
March travelled to Bedford knowing that a tough game was in the offing. Their cause wasnt helped as they only had 10 players. The visitors, sponsored by Bar 23, began on the back foot and soon found themselves trailing by two goals. Then March began to attack with some fluent moves involving the effervescent Hugh Whittome and the bubbly Josh Birt, but they found the Bedford defence too strong. The home side scored a third goal before half time, to leave March trailing 0-3 but the score could so easily have been 3-3 at the break, with March creating a hatful of chances.
The second half saw March visibly tiring and Bedford took full advantage, scoring six goals without reply, all from well worked penalty corner routines. In the dying seconds, youngster Josh Birt won the ball on the half way line, took on four defenders and the keeper, and with the goal at his mercy, kicked the ball wide of the goal, just to emphasise the sort of day March were having. Final score 0-9. Next week March entertain Ipswich 3rd XI start 2.30pm.
NE14 HOCKEY EAST MENS LEAGUE DIVISION 3 NORTH WEST
March Town 2nd XI ( 0 ) 0 Cambridge University 3rd XI ( 4 ) 6
March were surprised by the strength of the University side, and the visitors opened well, scoring an early fluke goal as the ball came off the top edge of the attackers stick from a reverse stick sweep. March then played some good hockey for 20 minutes before unforced errors saw them concede two further goals to the University forwards. The visitors wrapped up the half with a well taken goal from a penalty corner strike to leave March trailing 0-4 at the break. The home side played well and tackled well throughout the half, with Andrew Wright making some good runs into the Cambridge defence.
The second half saw Cambridge University coming out hard at the March defence, and they scored their fifth goal after just 5 minutes play. March, sponsored by Knights End Training, came back well, forcing two penalty corners, but they were unable to capitalise. Tom Nickalls was having a good game for March in midfield. Although March tried hard, they couldnt match their opponents and the visitors scored their sixth goal late on in the game. Andrew Wright was named Player of the Match for March who, next week travel to play Bourne 2nd XI, having beaten them 6-1 earlier in the Season start 2pm.

March Town 3rd XI ( 1 ) 2 Horncastle 1st XI ( 1 ) 2
March Goal Scorers: ADAM TRIGGS 2
League leaders Horncastle can consider themselves lucky to have left March with a point, after both their goals appeared to have been scored from shots taken outside the circle. The runaway leaders of Division 5 North West were well held by a well drilled March side. The home side took the lead after 10 minutes with a trade mark breakaway goal, well taken by Adam Triggs. The rest of the half saw good attacking play from both sides, with defences coming out on top. Then just before half time, Horncastle equalised with a goal that appeared to be struck from just outside the circle, but the goal stood.
The second half saw some fierce tackling in a hard, robust game. A Horncastle defender was sent off for aiming a punch at Nick King, before March, sponsored by ROI Distribution, broke from defence and regained the lead through Adam Triggs. Then with just 5 minutes remaining, Horncastle broke from defence. March keeper Toby Odlin, came out to the edge of the circle to narrow the gap. The Horncastle forward struck the ball past him from outside the circle and the Horncastle umpire awarded a goal, despite the protests of the entire March side. Manager Sid Dickinson singled out keeper Toby Odlin for his outstanding performance in a side who were worthy of the point gained against the League leaders. Next week March travel to play Cambridge Nomads 4th XI start 2pm.

March Town 4th XI ( 0 ) 0 St.Neots 4th XI ( 3 ) 5
This was a very important game for March, with the local side having won the corresponding fixture 6-2 back in October 2007, and with St.Neots being just above March in the League table. March, sponsored by Hackett Windle, began with some good attacking play involving Grant Brownlow and Daniel Woods. The home side were unlucky to concede the first goal, and felt well capable of getting back into the game. However, by half time, they were trailing 0-3 as St.Neots scored twice before the end of the half.
March suffered an early setback in the second half as Toby Sutton was taken off injured. Fortunately for March Ryan Wright was able to come on as substitute. With the side unsettled, St.Neots took full advantage, scoring two further goals to open up a 5-0 lead. March were being outplayed by a keener, more enthusiastic side, but the defence held firm, preventing the visitors from adding to their tally. Youngster Raman Sidhu was voted Player of the Match. Next week March travel to play Long Sutton 3rd XI start 2.30pm.

March Goal Scorers: DAVID HODSON 3, ROSS AMBLER 2, SIMON LAWS 1
Since Xmas, March have now won 5 and drawn 1 of their 6 matches played, scoring 32 goals and conceding 15. Depending on the results of other matches played today, the team might even be heading Division 7 North West by tonight. The first half of Saturdays game was pretty uneventful, with both sides forcing a number of penalty corners, but with neither side able to capitalise. Having missed last weeks match, Simon Laws soon stamped his mark on the game, scoring the opening goal after just 6 minutes. Half way through the half, St.Neots did make the most of a penalty corner attempt, scoring the equalising goal. March made the mistake of trying to run at St.Neots older experienced defenders, something which was put right at half time in Gary Sandfords team talk.
The second half was only 5 minutes old when David Hodson fired March into the lead. 5 minutes later, David Hodson made it 3-1 to the visitors. Strangely enough, the next quarter of an hour brought no goals, but then Ross Ambler got his name on the score sheet to give March a healthy 4-1 lead. Within 3 minutes, St.Neots had reduced the arrears with a goal from a penalty corner strike. At the other end of the pitch, March were awarded a penalty corner, and David Hodson found the net for his hat trick goal. Within minutes, an excellent 40 yard run from Stuart Fox, and an equally excellent pass, saw Ross Ambler score his second and Marchs sixth goal. Second placed St.Neots had the final say, making the score 6-3 to March. The March team were buzzing as they came off the field, knowing that there was a possibility that they might possibly be League leaders at the end of the day. Next week, March have no scheduled fixture as Long Sutton 4th XI unfortunately withdrew from the League earlier in the Season.
CAMBS LADIES LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION LEAGUE CUP
Ely City 1st XI ( 4 ) 10 March Ladies 2nd XI ( 0 ) 0
Without a game for two weeks, an under strength March side travelled to Ely for Saturdays League Cup encounter. With Nikki Wright playing her first game in midfield for the Club in over a year, March, sponsored by Mondi Packaging UK Ltd., held Ely for the first 10 minutes. Then the early good form was undone as Ely scored two quick scrambled goals to put March well and truly on the back foot. Despite some brave keeping from stand in keeper Sheri Nielander, March found themselves trailing 0-4 at half time.
The second half was no better for March as the Ely midfield and flowing attack was too strong for a demoralised March defence. Despite the best efforts of Player of the Match Angie Rodger, in defence, the visitors crumbled, conceding six goals without reply to lose the match 0-10.
With a basic 11 and an umpire borrowed from the pool (our sincere thanks to Simon Wilson), who was there to do the game after ours we went into the game less than confident but came away with a priceless win.
They scored first with a flicked conversion at a short, but it must have been a fluke because they could not repeat it. We leveled before half time and then 2 goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half sealed their fate.
With a makeshift sweeper (Me) and a reserve keeper this was a fantastic result and maintains the dream that we can avoid relegation.
FOOTNOTE The other results are in and now there are 4 teams at the bottom within 2 points of each other. We are still bottom due to our rubbish goal difference but with 6 games to go is is all to play for.
